Pueblo Holiday History
There is always an abundance of holiday activities in Pueblo to put
one in the holiday spirit. For an early start to the holiday spirit, Rosemount
Museum is decked in the finest of Victorian holiday baubles, bangles and
decorations. Rosemount is truly the Victorian gem of Colorado. From Thanksgiving
through December, thousands of visitors tour the exquisite mansion to view
the finest of holiday regalia throughout every room. The Parade Of Lights
is a gala time with fanciful and imaginative floats aglow with Christmas
lights as the parade winds through the downtown Pueblo area.
There
is always the ElectriCritters at the Pueblo Zoo for a magically lighted
nighttime tour of the zoo. Thousands of lights make up whimsical animals
with music and refreshments to add to the evening tour. Family fun can
continue with a driving Christmas light tour at the University of Southern
Colorado. Lighted storybook characters and carolers line the course.
And
Christmas would not be complete without The Nutcracker. It is presented
on several weekends in December. Children usually have an opportunity to
dine with Santa Claus at one of the special Santa Claus breakfasts in town.
Of course Christmas would not be whole in Pueblo without the Posada, the
enactment of Mary and Joseph going to Bethlehem. Crowds follow Mary and
Joseph through the streets of Pueblo to remind everyone of the meaning
of Christmas.
Naturally, holiday time includes shopping and the Union Avenue
Historic District provides a unique and fun place for holiday gift buying.
While it is filled with wonderful boutiques, antique stores, and art galleries
to fill up the day, there are always holiday activities from horse drawn
carriage rides to Santa occasionally being spied as he wanders through
the Historic District. If that isn't enough, there is always the historic
self-guided walking tour. Pueblo is undoubtedly the place for making happy
holiday spirits.

Christmas
at the Abriendo Inn
Since opening in 1989, Christmas has been
a most special time at the Abriendo Inn. Countless hours are spent
bringing the glow and spirit of Christmas to every room at the inn. Each
guest room has its own uniquely decorated Christmas tree around which,
over the years, some of our guests have opened their own presents while
celebrating the joys of the season. Holiday
garlands of evergreens and ribbon adorn the fireplace, French doors and windows
throughout the common areas of the inn. But the jewel of all the decor is
the towering Christmas tree in the parlor which is a vision of lights
and glistening ornaments.
The second Sunday in December has always
been set aside to share the Christmas spirit of the Abriendo Inn with
others. It is an enchanting tour with glittering lights and
decorations throughout the inn. The Abriendo Inn's traditional open
house is a magical evening for all to enjoy.

Abriendo
Inn Historical Note
The Abriendo Inn of today - listed on the National Register of
Historic Places - traces its existence to the enterprise of Martin Walter, a
German-born brewmaster. Walter first owned a brewery in Wisconsin with his
brother, but this was not producing sufficient income to support both
families. So, Martin headed West and found Pueblo a boom town with a steel
mill, three smelters, and a brewery.
He purchased the Pueblo Brewery in
1898, and engaged a
California architect to design plans for a massive "Classic Box" or
"Foursquare" blond brick house that would meet the requirements of his
burgeoning family - 8 children by two wives. The new business - and
Walter's family - flourished. Twenty-seven different brands of beer were
produced in his renamed Walter Brewery Co. and distributed in seven Western
states with such tantalizing slogans as, "Walter's Gold Label Beer
contains as much nutrition as cow's milk!," and "Quench your
thirst, steady your nerves, cool your brain with a glass of Pueblo Beer."
With the brewery's closure through the Prohibition period,
Walter turned his interests towards real estate and prospered. His
obituary hailed him as "one of Pueblo's foremost and best beloved citizens."
The Widow Walter let spare bedrooms to boarders during the Depression. In
the 1940's, Dr. Samuel Potter moved his family into the mansion.
The Walter Brewery closed its doors for good in 1975. The
Potter's residency was followed by that of nuns, then attorneys, before it
became the award-winning Abriendo Inn Bed and
Breakfast.
